Good stuff Bob! Eliminating those time-stealers is indeed valuable. Time to evaluate and start my list.
(you may want to start with that Ryan guy)

And thanks for robbing 3 minutes and 56 seconds of my day on this video ;)

Hey Rebecca:

I too still have a house phone...cordless though :). Most of my friends have only a cell number, they give it EVERYONE and then wonder why dinner, time with kids,10pm news, sleep and everything else gets interrupted.

Thanks for the support...TWS is not an easy disease to fight. :) I'll call you with the meeting dates for the TWS support group!

I am SO with you, Bob! Just last night I had to make three tries (THREE!) before being able to pass a woman on the sidewalk who was dialing and then talking and then doing god knows what else as she swerved to the right and then to the left and then to the right again--having no idea she was causing foot traffic headaches behind her.

Besides the tech withdrawal syndrome--another challenge that comes up for a lot of folks who opt to get off of the smartphone wagon is the pressure and judgment from those still on it. I don't have a smartphone--like you, when I want to do work or get on the computer, I make myself sit down to do it (at my desk or wherever else I can open up my laptop) and I'm very old school when it comes to the phone. When I'm on the phone with someone, I want to be there 100%, and because of this, I (cough, gasp, OMG, really?) use a land line phone and only use my (disposable) cell when traveling or meeting friends when it's crowded. And, I have to say, the judgments thrown my way daily because of it are not for the faint of heart! Even my very best friend laughed and laughed at me when she realized I still use a corded phone (what better way to make sure you don't take it with you, I say!). And every time I give my number out to people, they go on and on (and ON) about "What? You want me to call you on a LAND LINE?...What do you mean you don't have GPS on your phone?...Why can't I text you while you're at the theater?...How do you know what restaurants are nearby without a smartphone?" and so on and so fourth. And the saddest part to me is that most of them cannot comprehend how I still function in the world without all that. Quite happily and peacefully, actually. I don't get surprised with calls at inopportune times, I don't ignore my friends and family when I'm out with them, and when I go out for a walk--walking is all I'm doing, and it's lovely.

Congratulations on facing the withdrawal, Bob!

Oh yeah, and had I used my phone to type this reply, I doubt you'd be able to read it for all the textspeak type-os I definitely would have made. ;-)!

Bob, thank you so much for writing such an experience you had with members of our Armed Forces. I am a retired military wife and the seen you spoke of is my son and my husband deployed to Iraq. My sons young boy was 11 years old and he took the departure of his father very hard. Just like the one you witnessed. My grandson did not even enjoy Christmas that year. All he did was sit in the chair and watch Tv. I spoke to him letting him know, that I know it is very hard to be without daddy right now. He came back with an answer that others have heard to I amsure. "all I want for christmas is for daddy and papa to come home.' thank you for sharing your article it was beautiful and one that I expecially could picture in my mind. thanks again for supporting our troops. Best wishes, Judy Lowery Retired Military wife and military mom

Tom

I think it's a combination of three things...
first you took some time and put energy into it, second you actually had to put thought into it, especially if you have enclosed something like a news clipping or article reference that's personal to the recipient and, third just the fact that you did something DIFFERENT makes it stand out. Keep it up and remember...
'do business on your own terms!'

Great tip! I've done this a couple of times but with letters. Do you think its more effective because you're putting more time into it, or is it the thought that counts with the note?

Thanks and keep the great info coming!
